About the Role

The Director of Audience Growth & Partnerships role is respon­sible for growing Skylight’s reach and engage­ment while devel­oping earned revenue through spon­sor­ships, part­ner­ships, adver­tising, and events.

Working in our fast-paced, start-up envi­ron­ment, you will drive audi­ence engage­ment and estab­lish Skylight as the defin­i­tive source for news, infor­ma­tion and solu­tions related to the clean energy tran­si­tion in resi­den­tial build­ings in New York City. You will also shape spon­sor­ship and adver­tising offer­ings, expand rela­tion­ships with orga­ni­za­tions working in the clean tech and clean energy indus­tries, and deliver a robust series of in-person events. 

Success in this role requires under­standing how audi­ence and revenue rein­force each other: strong jour­nalism builds trust; trust builds commu­nity; and commu­nity creates oppor­tu­ni­ties for sustain­able growth. You will review newsletter metrics, develop commu­nity part­ner­ships, test reader-engage­ment strate­gies, build sponsor rela­tion­ships, and pitch orga­ni­za­tions aligned with Skylight’s mission.

Responsibilities

Audience Development & Reader Engagement

  • Develop strate­gies to grow the Skylight audi­ence, executing across newsletter, social, search, events, referral, and other sources.
  • Analyze audi­ence data and iden­tify oppor­tu­ni­ties to increase read­er­ship, engage­ment, reten­tion, and loyalty.
  • Build and manage newsletter growth initia­tives; create and test engage­ment strate­gies that turn readers into active partic­i­pants and repeat visitors.
  • Develop a robust annual cadence of commu­nity-building initia­tives, including our Clean Energy Building Tour series, reader events, and other programs.
  • Collaborate closely with the edito­rial team to iden­tify stories and other content with strong audi­ence potential.
  • Track and report on key audi­ence metrics and develop action­able insights.

Revenue Partnerships, Sponsorships & Advertising

  • Identify, culti­vate, and manage spon­sor­ship, part­ner­ship and adver­tising rela­tion­ships aligned with Skylight’s edito­rial values; build and manage a pipeline of prospec­tive part­ners and advertisers.
  • Develop and execute part­ner­ship strate­gies with aligned orga­ni­za­tions, building on our substan­tial existing rela­tion­ships and goodwill.
  • Create spon­sor­ship pack­ages across newsletter, events, and branded opportunities.
  • Lead outreach, pitching, nego­ti­a­tion, and rela­tion­ship management.
  • Ensure that commer­cial initia­tives main­tain a clear sepa­ra­tion from edito­rial deci­sion-making and preserve audi­ence trust.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise and mentor the part-time Audience Associate and Events Associate, helping estab­lish prior­i­ties, work­flows, and clear perfor­mance goals.
  • Provide edito­rial and strategic guid­ance on audi­ence engage­ment initia­tives, commu­nity program­ming, and growth efforts.
  • Foster strong collab­o­ra­tion across edito­rial, audi­ence, events, and revenue initiatives.
  • Ensure audi­ence, events, and part­ner­ship efforts work together as part of a unified growth strategy.

Qualifications

  • A passion for cities, clean energy, sustain­ability, and housing-related topics
  • Demonstrated success growing newsletter audi­ences, increasing engage­ment, devel­oping commu­nity-centered audi­ence strate­gies, or building loyal readership
  • Experience iden­ti­fying, culti­vating and managing spon­sor­ship, part­ner­ship, or adver­tising rela­tion­ships that generate earned revenue
  • Strong under­standing of digital publishing and audi­ence analytics
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Strong project manage­ment and orga­ni­za­tional abil­i­ties, with a keen atten­tion to detail and the ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Proficiency in using content manage­ment systems and online publishing tools
  • Excellent commu­ni­ca­tion and rela­tion­ship-building skills
  • Comfort working in an entre­pre­neurial envi­ron­ment with evolving prior­i­ties and the ability to work independently

We antic­i­pate successful candi­dates will have 5 – 7 years of rele­vant expe­ri­ence, though we welcome appli­cants whose expe­ri­ence may not follow a tradi­tional path.

Compensation

The expected salary is $90,000 – 110,000, with full bene­fits (health care and 401k match). We are committed to full, fair compen­sa­tion, and this range is not the cap for a career at Skylight.
